California Golf Club - South San Francisco, CA
Even though, I had lived in the Bay Area for 7 years, I had never visited the Cal Club. This was a huge mistake, as it is one of the coolest clubs in California. The course itself is also one of the most respected in the area. It is not uncommon to hear folks stating their preference for Cal Club over local heavyweights like the Olympic Club or San Francisco Golf Club.
The course opened in 1926 and was designed by AV Macan and Willie Locke, later on, Alister Mackenzie would redesign the bunkering right before his work at Cypress Point. After years of tinkering and erosion of the original design, The Cal Club would hire Kyle Philips to restore the grandeur of the Cal Club's original architecture. This brought fine fescue grasses to the rough and fairways making it one of a kind in San Francisco.
