Pelican Hill Golf Club - Newport Beach, CA

The Golf Club at Pelican Hill is a Tom Fazio design that features 2 different courses, the North and the South course.  Both are ranked in the top 100 public courses by Golf Digest.  Although similar, the 2 different layouts are also very unique.  The North Course play slightly longer and more inland offering views of the Pacific on every hole.  The South Course plays slightly shorter and gets right down to the beach on 3 holes.  I found the North Course to be more challenging and fun to play while the South was more scenic and had 5 or 6 very memorable holes.

While in town for a wedding, I decided to go for the full Pelican Hill experience and pack in 36 holes all in one day, which was not a problem for this golf junkie.  I birdied the 1st of my 36 holes on the North course, but struggled with the greens on my opening 18.  Every hole on the North Course keeps you on your toes and I had a great time taking photos and working my way around the course.

After a stretch of pars on the South Course, I birdied #7 and #8 and had my sights set on the 60's.  The challenge of the finish and the distraction of the views proved too much and I settled for a mighty fine 71 with a sand save on 18.  Overall, this was one the best 36 holes that I have played in a single day.
