Stonetree Golf Club - Novato, CA
Stone Tree Golf Club is one of the more stern tests of golf you can find in the San Francisco Bay area. Designed by Jim Summers, Johnny Miller, and Sandy Tatum, Stone Tree features a slope of 138, less than generous landing areas, and a course rating of 73.1.
Stone Tree really feels like two different courses. There are holes 1-6, 10-12, and 18 that are routed through a wetland area with little elevation change. While these holes are a well laid out challenge, it's holes 7-9 and 13-17 that really make the course shine. These northern holes feature dramatic elevation changes as they roll through the oak studded holes of Marin County. Good golf shots are required on this stretch if you want to keep playing the same ball.
I have always been a fan of Stonetree Golf Club as I believe it is one of the Bay Area's better public courses. The course is surrounded by very few homes and has a great wildlife feel to it. I was once greeted by a pack of wild turkey's on the 14th green. You can also look for the Green eyed Egret to make an appearance in the gallery.
The 7th hole is also one of my favorites. While playing in a large skins game in 2014, I rolled in a birdie on the challenging short par 4 and took home some big $$.
