Crooked Stick Golf Club - Carmel, IN
Crooked Stick Golf Club is the original masterpiece created by legendary Pete Dye and his wife Alice. Since it's inception in 1964, the course has hosted many important golf tournaments. The most famous of these was John Daly's triumph at the 1991 PGA Championship. I remember watching big John on TV as an 11 year old and being amazed.
Having grown up in Indiana, I longed to play a course like Crooked Stick. As a public course kid, I believed that there were just some courses I would never be allowed to play. 25 years after watching John Daly on TV, I would get my chance and Crooked Stick would not disappoint.
In October of 2016, I teed it up a month or so after the BMW Championship had left town. After some solid play all day long, I would arrive on the 18th tee box needing a birdie "to win the BMW and it's $1.53 million dollar first place prize." After a solid tee shot that avoided the water on the right hand side, I hit a wedge to 25 feet beyond the hole. This would be an unlikely victory, but I had a putt to capture the championship. As a hush fell over the crowd, I stroked the putt beautifully. it tumbled towards the hole with perfect speed. Moments later it would take a final left hand turn and fall into the cup for birdie and the victory. Instead of the raucous crowd erupting into chaos, I simply looked over to my playing partner, Josh, as he exclaimed "You've got to be kidding me."
