Riverton Revitalization

Like many other historic courses in America, Riverton Country Club had stood for decades as only a portion of its original glory. Time and nature had slowly overtaken Riverton and it was in need of some attention. Fortunately, what was lost can always be found. Not only does this 1900 Donald Ross design have the pedigree, but its caretakers have the dedication to ensure that Riverton gets the attention that it deserves.

After starting a 3 phase restoration in 2017, Riverton Country Club is nearing the finish line. Leading the way with the restoration is one of the foremost authorities on Donald Ross design, Tyler Rae. Tyler has used a collection of course photos from different centuries to bring back life to the classic Donald Ross design.

My task was simply to capture the golf magic that exists at Riverton. Please enjoy my 10 favorite images from this June 2022 photography shoot.

#10 - Opening View

The list begins with the opening view at Riverton. This short par 4 provides a scenic tee shot that sets the tone for a very enjoyable round of golf.

#9 - Sunrise on Sixteen

Don’t let the sunrise distract you as a back pin can provide plenty of challenge on this 2 tiered green. A front pin affords the golfer a great chance for birdie.

#8 - Cloudy and Crispy

Even with the sun hiding out, the cloudy scene forming over the 14th green makes me want to grab my clubs and play.

#7 - Fall in June Vibes

Perhaps it’s the leaves on the green, but this shot from behind the 9th green not only does a great job of showcasing the trees at Riverton but it makes me want to watch some football.

#6 - Blue Skies and Birdies

It took several days for the sun to pop out, but when it finally did I was able to capture some of my favorite moments at Riverton. This is the mid morning view from behind the potentially reachable par 4 8th hole.

#5 - King of the Par 3’s

The 4 par 3’s at Riverton Country Club are an exceptionally strong bunch but the 6th hole leads the way in terms of beauty and design. This redan style golf hole provides a challenging tee shot to a right to left sloping green.

#4 - Birds Eye View

While I like to get down and close with the golf course, I always remember to air out my wings and let if fly high. Here we find the extremely scenic 4th hole from high above.

#3 - Fescue & Fire

The early morning sun lights up the fescue beyond the challenging 3rd hole. This #1 handicap hole will challenge even the best golfers at 450 yards from the back tee.

#2 - Seven Layer Bean Dip

A well composed photo always includes a substantial amount of layers. My rule of thumb is that If I get more than 7 layers, that photo becomes particularly delicious.

#1 - 4 elements on the 4th

A great photograph is one that combines all aspects of the golf course and provides a general feel for the entire golf experience. This view from behind #4 hits on my 4 main takeaways from Riverton.

  1. Striking bunker design

  2. Whispy fescue goodness

  3. Tidy routing with tees and greens close to each other

  4. Classic Donald Ross vibes
