Since its inception in 1981, Saddlebrook Resort has been leading the way in Tampa when it comes to high end golf and tennis resorts. Saddlebrook has a storied history with elite training programs, world class tennis facilities and championship golf. This all inclusive resort features scenic walking trails, spa experiences, looming cypress trees and exceptional dining. Everything at Saddlebrook is designed to curate your inner champion while still providing a family friendly experience filled with relaxation and adventure.
After writing that introduction and reading it back, I was keenly aware that it sounded like a line straight out of the marketing department. But honestly, I agree with it. I found myself surprised by the history of the resort and I immediately felt comfortable and excited to explore the property. The only thing missing was the fact that I didn’t have my entire family with me.
The big news here is that the resort has recently underwent a $92 million transformation and a significant focus of that project was directed at golf on the property. What was once 36 holes is now 27 and Rees Jones has rerouted the property to leverage the land more effectively. The result is an interchangeable mix of 9 hole courses that keep things exciting during your visit.
The project has also generated some tremendous new practice facilities. Spanning over 13 acres, Saddlebrook offers a double-sided driving range extending more than 360 yards, two TifEagle bermuda grass putting greens, and three short-game areas with green-side bunkers.
When I first arrived at the resort, a sense of 1980’s nostalgia immediately washed over me. You can tell that Saddlebrook has been around for a while, but the new facilities give it a modern charm. It is a glorious little mixture that would stay with me for the entirety of my time at the resort. On my way to my room, I noticed the massive community pool. Later I would learn that it is a 500,000-gallon “Super Pool” named for the 1984 Super Bowl hosted in Tampa. The rooms are also large and spacious. It feels much more like you are staying at a friend’s place than visiting a resort.
The Oak, Pine and Cypress are all 9 hole courses with the Oak and Pine pairing up for the premier 18 hole golf course. Saddlebrook offers a classic Florida golf resort experience with lush green grass and ponds on many of the golf holes. Each 9 has its own distinct style and here is a good mixture of challenge, opportunity and beauty on each of the golf courses.
The experience at Saddlebrook is one that feels very different from its competitors. With so much to do at the resort, there is a distinct family feel to the destination. However, any golf and tennis enthusiast is certain to appreciate their time spent here. Most notably, it feels like you are part of a community during your stay, the staff is extremely helpful and friendly and that translates to just about every guest on the property. Any visitor is certain to find Saddlebrook a unique and warm winter destination.
