It took me a while to find Lost Rail during my travels. Fortunately, I found it in great condition during the summer of 2026. The golf course was designed by Scott Hoffman in 2022 and is Omaha’s first new private club in over 20 years.
Even with the course opening in 2022, Lost Rail’s origins go back to 1914 when construction began on a Burlington railroad shortcut line. Service ran briefly on the railroad before before maintenance issues mounted and the line was abandoned, leaving a hidden earth berm across the property that inspired the club's name a century later.
Please enjoy this photogenic tour of every hole at Lost Rail Golf Club. All yardages are from the back tees.
Hole #1 - Par 5 - 588 yards
Like many other great golf courses before it, Lost Rail starts off with a par 5. You get two big swings to feel the flow of the round on the first hole. The large left to right sloping green can also catch you off guard if you aren’t prepared. Like many of the greens at Lost Rail, the first green is surprisingly quick and can prove problematic if you are in the wrong spot.
Hole #2 - Par 4 - 425 yards
The second hole plays over and down a large swale in the fairway. The prudent golfer will lay up to the edge of the creek and strike with precision from the end of the fairway. You get a great preview of the upcoming fourth hole in the background.
Hole #3 - Par 4 - 415 yards
There are a handful of golf holes at Lost Rail that feature an “off the rails” set of tee boxes. The third hole possesses one of the most dramatic version of these tees. Playing through a chute of trees, the 3rd is an uphill dog leg left. The green has one of the most dramatic false fronts on the golf course and you can easily putt off of the green if you aren’t careful.
Hole #4 - Par 4 - 475 yards
The fourth hole is Lost Rail’s first big long par 4. A good drive will find its position in between the fairway bunkers leaving a long iron into the green. Fortunately, there is a large bailout to the right that allows golfers a reasonable chance to save par with a good up and down. Par on this monster feels like a birdie.
Hole #5 - Par 3 - 186 yards
If you were only gonna take one photograph at Lost Rail, the fifth hole is the most likely candidate. This short par 3 plays over a large ravine to a well bunkered green. It is one glorious little piece of eye candy. Those bunkers are also exceptionally deep and a par from the sand is something exceptional.
Hole #6 - Par 4 - 459 yards
Avoid the fairway bunker on the right hand side of the fairway and you will be in a good position to find the green. That bunker in the bottom left of the photograph appears to be much closer to the green than it actually is.
Hole #7 - Par 4 - 396 yards
The Doublemint Twins, Double Stuf Oreos, Double Jeopardy… there are a lot of great duos in this world. That includes the pair of greens on the 7th hole at Lost Rail. The 7th plays up over a ridge in the fairway and leaves the golfer a relatively short shot into one of two different greens. Depending on the day, you will get to play to either the left or right green. Both greens are tucked over a little creek and set into the hillside. Some of the most famous courses in the world have double greens like this and I love it.
Hole #8 - Par 3 -231 yards
This monster of a par 3 occupies a cozy little corner of the property which gives it a cool feeling from the tee box. You will need a long iron or potentially a hybrid to reach this Redan style green.
Hole #9 - Par 4 - 313 yards
There isn’t a lot of target golf at Lost Rail, but the 9th hole gives us only a few patches of turf to hit onto. The big dogs will be compelled to drive the green while most golfers will opt for an iron into the fairway and then a short iron into the green. The fun meter picks up a notch here.
Hole #10 - Par 4 - 303 yards
The only thing better than a short par 4 is two short par 4’s in a row. It’s a glorious start to the back nine at Lost Rail with a great opportunity to find the putting surface with a well placed drive. There are several lines that will find the green here but the preferred line is just right of the center bunker with a little draw. The slope of the terrain will funnel that drive right onto the putting surface. This is a spectacularly fun golf hole.
Hole #11 - Par 5 - 531 yards
There are only 3 par 5’s at Lost Rail and the 11th hole is the best the best of the bunch. The green is reachable in two shots, but it requires a precise approach. A handful of bunkers will swallow up just about anything that doesn’t find the slender putting surface. It’s a fantastic option to lay back and approach with a wedge or roll the dice and try to scramble for birdie.
Hole #12 - Par 4 - 503 yards
I was battling a wind when I arrived on the 12th hole at Lost Rail which made this monster feel like a par 5. After a poor drive, I had to play a 3 wood into the green on top of the hill. Most golfers won’t face as difficult of a shot as I did, but the 12th is still one of the most challenging par 4’s on the golf course.
Hole #13 - Par 4 - 398 yards
The fun meter flexes hard on this downhill par 4. A big drive will crest the hill and flow down towards a flat landing area with a great view of this two tiered green. The approach shot is a fun one over a small creek and a pair of bunkers.
Hole #14 - Par 3 - 199 yards
There are 4 solid par 3’s at Lost Rail and the 14th is easily my favorite. Not only does it provide a great view of a top tier golf barn but it also provides a beautiful challenge. The two tier green in combination with the bunkering offers a multitude of interesting short game situations. The view from behind the green looking back towards the clubhouse is especially charming during sunset.
Hole #15 - Par 4 - 423 yards
The 15th hole is such a spectacular finishing hole that if you haven’t been keeping track, you might feel like your round has come to an end by the time you hole out. This sweeping dog leg right feels like the ideal 18th hole with the club house nearby. You can even see the American flag flying in the backdrop. Some creative bunkering around the green really makes this hole sparkle.
Hole #16 - Par 3 - 149 yards
After a splendid “finish” on the 15th hole, you head to the other side of the clubhouse for a spectacular trio of finishing holes. That trio starts off with a glorious short par 3 surrounded by bunkers. A slight miss and you are certain to be sandy.
Hole #17 - Par 4 - 496 yards
The 17th is Lost Rail’s final par 4 and provides a great deal of slope. The opening tee shot slopes hard to the right and the approach shot slopes hard back to the left. It takes 2 great shots to find the green here.
Hole #18 - Par 5 - 526 yards
The finishing hole at Lost Rail gives you a good chance to make a birdie. It might be from finding the green in two shots or it might be from a well struck wedge. The success of your drive will determine your method of approach. Even a layup can be challenging as you navigate the shrinking real estate as you near the green.
